It seems like tech companies need to have a lot of patents to protect themselves from patent trolls like Intellectual Ventures.

Looks like I was wrong on Nortel patent purchase- it was a consortium and GOOG was not part of it. Still, it seems like tech companies always find a way to spent their dough wand shareholders usually see little of it.

This makes me think that GOOG business is not as good as previously thought, if they have to work so hard to defend it (assuming the patent purchase is defensive in nature not offensive).

Actually it's worse (better?) than what you are implying. GOOG is defending its Android business, which might have a bright future, but it's not clear whether it's bringing a great deal of ad revenues now. So GOOG main (97% revenue ad) business does not need defending, which is good. But their next blockbuster needs defending even before it became a huge Google-profit-center success, which is bad. :)

I already said couple times that GOOG is now MSFT. And MSFT is now IBM. And IBM ... well, it's still printing money AFAIK. ;)
