On a Mac, it's a Command I (i) for italic and Command B for bold.

On a PC, I'm pretty sure it's Control I and Control B.

You either select the word(s) and then use the shortcut, or alternatively just use the shortcut to enter italic or bold mode, type what you want, then type the shortcut again to exit the mode and return to normal text.
