People "want" these things because they think they're paying for them.

People want these things because for many of them it's the only retirement income they have...and as corporations continue to shed retirement plans the problem worsens.

But if you pose it as, "You're social security benefits are causing the deficit to be substantially higher, because you're drawing out more than you paid in. Given that, would you be in favor of reduced benefits for future retirees?" you would get different responses.

Do you have such a survey or is it just how you think it would come out?

Even you, purportedly an educated, smart person -- are unable to comprehend the concepts of cash versus accrual accounting and the fact that there is no accounting surplus in SS. You cannot understand the meaning of "unfunded liability", and you have no concept of how this program, which has cash in the bank, could possibly be broke. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that SS is broke. Medicare is the same story, different verse.

What exactly is so complex about this that you think i don't get? What's with you man?
