Silver Market Update

GET READY for a SILVER SURPRISE...

Silver held up surprisingly well during the stockmarket collapse - you will recall that we had expected it to take more of a beating - no doubt assisted by gold's sparkling performance, so that now, having held above strong support, and with a marked improvement in its COT structure over the past week, it is believed to be poised for a really strong upleg.

The 6-month chart for silver shows HUGE upside potential, with a powerful uptrend starting from right where we are now. If the interpretation of the wave count is correct (this can be a big "if" of course, but it does look very clear at this point), then the point we are at now is close to the trough of the wave 2 reaction that should now immediately lead to a strong wave 3 uptrend, all this following the 3-wave A-B-C correction shown on the chart. Even without reference to wave theories the chart certainly looks encouraging as silver managed to break above the quite strong resistance in the $39.00 - $39.50 zone on its wave 1 advance which is now functioning as a support level, in addition to which its moving averages are now in bullish alignment and it is not overbought on short to medium-term oscillators as made clear by the RSI and MACD indicators on the chart. Everything appears to be in place for a big rally to get going - "all systems go" as they used to say.

Further evidence that a big rally is brewing in silver is provided by the latest COT chart, which shows a surprisingly large reduction in Commercial short positions in just one week - the Commercials are getting out of the way, which signals a rally - and it may have just started with today's (Monday's) 85 cent rise.

Gold Advances to Record as Platinum Reaches High
By Glenys Sim - Aug 21, 2011
Gold rallied for a sixth day to an all-time high as a global economic slowdown and the European debt crisis sent equities lower and boosted demand for a haven. Platinum climbed to the highest level in more than three years.

Immediate-delivery bullion climbed as much as 1.5 percent to $1,879.05 an ounce and traded at $1,872.80 at 9:29 a.m. Singapore time. The metal is up 16 percent in August, heading for its best monthly performance since September 1999.

“Gold has support given the risks are still there so I wouldn’t want to short gold in the current environment,” Jeremy Friesen, commodity strategist at Societe Generale SA, said from Hong Kong.

Asian stocks declined for a third day, extending a global slump, on concern German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s resistance to common euro-area bonds will prolong the region’s debt crisis. Central bankers from around the world will meet in Jackson Hole, Wyoming this week amid speculation Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke may signal a third-round of asset purchases to boost the faltering economic recovery.

December-delivery gold rose as much as 1.6 percent to a record $1,881.90 an ounce. Bullion priced in sterling advanced to an all-time high, while June-delivery gold on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange and December-delivery metal on the Shanghai Futures Exchange climbed to their highest ever.

Hedge Funds The metal’s relative strength index has topped 70 since Aug. 5, a signal to some investors who study technical charts that the metal may be overbought and set to decline. Exchange-traded product holdings fell for the first time in five days on Aug. 19 to 2,211.095 metric tons after reaching a record 2,216.756 tons on Aug. 8, Bloomberg data show. Hedge funds and other money managers trimmed their net-long gold positions by 2 percent to 200,086 contracts in the week to Aug. 16, data from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission showed.

“A sharp correction would be triggered by a quick resolution or a clear direction of policy on the fiscal side to help market, which I don’t think would happen anytime soon,”said Friesen. “Conditions still remain bullish.”

Cash platinum advanced as much as 0.9 percent to $1,891.50 an ounce, the highest price since July 2008. Spot silver gained as much as 2.5 percent to $43.9750 an ounce, the highest level since May 3. Palladium gained for the first time in three days, rising 0.2 percent to $753 an ounce.

Here Comes The Rise Of The Silver Tide
by: Bob Kirtley August 26, 2011

Silver has now been through a correction and consolidation phase and is all set for the next leg up. We’ll start with a quick look at the chart. First of all, please note that the gap between the price of silver and the 200dma has closed considerably as this moving average heads north in support of silver prices. The RSI is now middle of the road at 54.39 with room to go either way, but we expect silver to move higher from here.

Conventional wisdom tells us to buy the dips. The difficulty with this old adage is how to know when the dip is complete and it is safe to re-enter the market. There are a myriad of factors to be considered, and any number of one-off events that can wreak havoc on the best of plans. There are also changes to the rules that impacted on the margin requirements recently, that were not included in your plan. The prospect of peace in Libya appears to have helped ease the tension a little in that area, although there is still a long way to go in order to truly stabilize the situation.

However, the fundamentals that have supported the rise in silver prices remain intact, with the popularity of silver increasing on a frequent basis, thus adding to the demand side of the equation. The lack of political will to implement prudent fiscal measures along with the "print now, pay later" actions of various governments has led to a distrust of both the political system and the fiat currency of which they are the guardians.

Almost everyone can now see that costs of just about everything are rising at an alarming rate. This is what happens when there is too much money chasing a set amount of goods and services. The really sad thing about this situation is not the oscillations of the stock market or the price of a new set of window wipers for the Mercedes. Its that the people who had very little to start with now face starvation. When faced with a situation of hopelessness, real or perceived, people will demonstrate -- and should their concerns be ignored, fists will fly.

We would all prefer to be a part of a balanced society where honest toil is rewarded and opportunity is visibly there for everyone to see and grasp with both hands, should they wish do so. However, we are where we are, and need to do what we can, no matter how small the effort, to protect ourselves.

This takes us back to silver. Having been a form of money for 6,000 years, we see its resurgence as symptomatic of a society leaning towards hard assets as opposed to the folding stuff. We have advocated its acquisition for some years now, and our strategy has remained consistent with this thinking. Firstly, buy the physical silver and keep it in your possession. Secondly, acquire a selection of good quality silver producers. Finally, if you have the stomach for it, the purchase of options where both silver and/or gold are the underlying commodities can help to turbo-charge your trading account.

Your trading account can be thought of as the riskiest element of your portfolio. With stocks, your core holdings, being less risky, we must remind you that there are numerous risks associated with the profession of mining. Owning the physical metal puts you in control and removes any third-party dependencies. Yes, you might need to buy a large dog, but the exercise will do you good.

There is also the philosophy whereby a small percentage of your wealth, say 5% to 10%, should be in precious metals. As good as this advice might be, we can only ponder where the lion's share of your wealth is to be placed. We are extreme in this respect, and we own no other stocks, outwith the metals sector. Our stance is far too extreme for most people, but as they say, "to each his own." We all need to take ownership of our lives, assess the situation and go to bat accordingly.

You know where we stand:

Physical silver
Associated mining stocks
Occasional trades in the options market
Looking beyond the short-term bumps in the road, we expect silver to surprise to the upside and challenge the $50-per-ounce level in short order. Once above this level, we expect silver prices to accelerate and never to return to $50 again.

So get your head up and get into position pronto. You have been warned.
