3COM CORP. Plans April Launch for CoreBuilder 9000 Enterprise Switch--

Nov. 17, 1997, 3Com Corp. (Nasdaq:COMS - news) said it will
introduce its CoreBuilder 9000 enterprise switch in April 1998.

COMS said the CoreBuilder 9000 platform defines a "new class"
of high-end switching systems for ATM and Gigabit Ethernet
high-capacity backbone networks.

Derek, locally here, it doesn't require the phone as those who are using it have related. I agree it greatly undermines the economics of it.

Imo getting greater speed for roughly the same price will make it take off. More speed for more expense will limit penetration.

The vast majority of cable systems are "one way", in other words they are glorified distbution amplifiers going one direction...Head- end to customer!

There will be a tremendous build-up of cable systems to replace old equipment if they are to survive in the future. There is money to be made in companies like Scientific Atlanta and others who build cable distubution equipment.

If the cable companies don't build they will be bypassed...its happening right now!

Technology is fun, especially since "change" is happening so fast. Lots of opportunites to make money. COMS has built the right box and has their bases covered.
