Look at every major issue of the last century. In every case it was the liberals who pointed out the problems from racism, New Deal to stupid wars and environmental damage.

I didn't see any conservatives or even moderates lead in those issues.

Again, I agree with you on what are the important issues but those are not the issues that motivate many conservatives. From their perspective, they are not the important issues. For the good conservative, fiscal sanity is key.......nothing wrong with that. For the good conservative, preserving American values is important.......nothing wrong with that. For the good conservative, defending the homeland is critical.........again, an important issue.

What has happened is that our conversations have become couched in superlatives............liberals are the best and conservatives are the worst, and visa a versa. So we end up talking over each other's head which only increases the division among us.

Obama is trying to stop it by drawing from both sides but its not working. Neither side wants to give an inch at this point. It can't continue this way going forward if we want to remain one nation. I think he knows that.

2) You tell me how we impress on people that minds must be developed without saying it. I work with people who have every ability to educate their kids yet do not impress on them the importance. The kids get married right after high school and that is it. They find me grating too!

That is a tragedy to both to the kids and society. Thinking is like exercising. It takes conditioning.

Look. I am a teacher. I know the importance of education. However, a formal education is not for everyone. I've mentioned before that I student taught at a lower middle income hi school where most of the parents were blue collar. During the semester, I mentioned a couple of times to the kids that they should be thinking about college. Most of them looked at me like I was talking a foreign language. One kid.......one of the smartest kids........even challenged me one day and said he saw no reason why he should have to go to college. This kid had been a pain in my ass the entire semester. He would give me dirty looks every time he could. However, whenever I challenged him to do better, he did.....going far beyond what I had asked. In fact, he did whatever I asked. Hey......for me, that's a win win, As I said, he was a smart kid.....but at the end of the day, maybe college was not for him. He clearly hated school. And lets not forget........Bill Gates dropped out of college and it never hurt him.

So, koan, not everything is an absolute no matter how much you want it to be.
