BTW, does anybody know if and why the hidef tv standard is in trouble? The computer biz could really use that stuff. What is happening?

Well, it's been a while, my recollection is there was a deal, Bill declared war on it, etc. On a slightly deeper level, the main problem seems to be cost. Computer guys want progressive scan, TV/equipment guys want interlace. Broadly speaking, I think it has something to do with why you can buy a 25 inch TV for about the same as a 15" computer monitor. I don't think the TV guys get to cheat and say "24 visible" either. Doubling the scan rate takes some kind of electronic guts, the kind that isn't suseptible to Moore's law. Flyback transformers and all that.

Sorry, this stuff is out of my depth too. There's also the political thing about how all the TV affiliates want to take the big HDTV channel they were given, put a low-def digital signal on a piece of it and use/sell the rest for their own benefit.

Cheers, Dan.
