COMPAQ MEDIA ALERT: Compaq Reveals Standards-Based High-Performance Computing Technology at Supercomputing '97

November 18, 1997 12:32 PM EST
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)

Compute Farms Showcase Scalability of Professional Workstations
Compaq Computer Corporation, the world's leading Windows NT-based enterprise systems solutions provider, will demonstrate high-performance computing technology (HPC) based on Compaq Professional Workstations at this year's Supercomputing '97 (SC'97) conference, November 15-21, in the San Jose Convention Center. This marks the first time that an industry standards-based systems vendor has exhibited at the show. Compaq will showcase its new compute farm technology, which links multiple Professional Workstations in a rack-mounted configuration to greatly accelerate moderately parallel applications and maximize throughput when running multiple jobs. The demo is designed to show that the company's industry standards-based compute farm technology offers substantially better price/performance in compute-intensive environments than traditional RISC/Unix-based high-performance computing servers.

Compaq's compute farm technology demo includes a 108-CPU rack of six dual Pentium II processor-based Professional Workstation 6000s and 24 quad Pentium Pro processor-based Professional Workstation 8000s interconnected with Compaq Netelligent 100 Mb Ethernet switches and Tandem ServerNet. The compute farm will span the booths of both Compaq and Platform Computing, and various application demonstrations will access the compute farm through Platform's LSF Workload Management Suite. Compaq's compute farm will showcase application and system software demonstrations from Alias|Wavefront, Cadence Design Systems, GeoCenter Inc., Kuck & Associates, MARC Analysis Research Corp., Rice University, State University of New York at Stony Brook and The Portland Group.
