It really was disgraceful how the New York Times disrespected the uniform.

Thank you for the explanation of the language of medals, uw.

The medals in the NYT picture were "greeking" to borrow the old copy editor's term - pseudo-text to fill the space. Except that copy editors replace the greeking with the real copy before publishing.
