Charles -

Has Intel ever made a big chip 'pre-announcement' and not shipped?

Not that I know. As a matter of fact, Microprocessor Report had a very interesting piece a few months back in which they compared how CPU developers fared in sticking to promises and preannouncements on schedule. Intel was best, PowerPC was last.

Still, I can't help remember the hopes for i960. Merced is technologically so difficult, I can't see it shipping before 2002*, if at all.

*Unless the list of 'features' and 'benefits' and 'performance' is chopped dramatically.
