That's exactly how DVD works, and that's why it supports everything from todays resolutions to much larger ones. Multiple file formats define DVD, within limits.

The new TVs are programmable, too, being updatable MPEG boxes among other things. This is all part of Open TV, too. The little dish people say they can do hdtv from their satellites as soon as there are TVs to send it to, because they just send data streams. So what's the hangup?

Did we (Americans) get the hose on TV standards again while we were distracted by the Internet/Java/Microsoft wrangling?
