re CMI, PCAR - don't you think that the trend would go from modular design (where you can choose your own engine for the truck chasis) to an integrated design? the modular design is unique to the USA, as far as I know. For better performance (gear, chasis, load) and integrated design would be better, imo, which would leave engine only suppliers in the cold (or they get bought out).

I laughed at the story from decades ago, when Mercedes/Daimler bought Freightliner and did not understand why anybody would choose a truck engine from a different manufacturer. I think they got their ass kicked until they realised that things work differently in the US.

Still, I think performance requires tight integration and I believe that this will do away with the "Choose your own engine" a la carte menu when purchasing trucks eventually.
