Re: "the initial CAUSE of the banking credit crunch...." It wasn't a 'credit crunch'. It was a full-blown global financial crisis and crash as a massive bubble popped. And the massive LEVERAGE of financial players (global banks, hedge funds, etc.) levered-up by totally unregulated "instruments of financial mass destruction" like Credit Default Swaps and C.M.O.s based on nothing but INDEXES (with no recourse to underlying mortgages at all) is what turned a common cold into pneumonia.
