NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Hurricane Irene strengthened to a Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said in its update at 8 a.m. Eastern time. A hurricane warning is in effect for the Southeastern, Central and Northwestern Bahamas as Irene moves to the west-northwest at 9 miles per hour. The storm is expected to approach the coast of North Carolina at about 2 a.m. on Saturday.
