That's what turned what would have otherwise been a simple cyclical recession, (a "common cold" for the economy), into a global disaster and pneumonia for everyone's economies. It was the massive leverage. And being able to make up paper to sell that wasn't based on ANY REAL MORTGAGES AT ALL... or even related to real estate at all such as Credit Default Swaps, and sell it in any desired amounts because it was a totally unregulated area. (Not the petty machinations of any one local or even national politician. To screw-up a bubble of tens of TRILLIONS in size takes a hell of a lot more than that....)
