thanks whitepine for that. tuesday night i was telling my mother about the huge charleston, south carolina quake in the 1800s, but i had forgotten the date. it just about destroyed the place. also about five years ago i saw a tv program on the new madrid quake (pronounced mad rid unlike the city in spain) in 1811/12. that is sure to happen again, and this time a ton of big cities are very close to the new madrid fault.
