My mother saying: "Better to wake up dead, than wake up with debt."

Keeps stuck inside my head to this day.

Got out of the phone with two of my boys. They are in debt to the company. Illustartes the case of human predisposition to take money today spend it and worry about it later.

They get money to support themselves while in the field. Lodging, food and car fuel.

It is a lot of money -in relation to what they earn- because only fuel is cheap in Angola.

The system works this way: They spend, settle account at month's end and roll that over.

They discovered that if they get full month advance, but stay out of the field for some time, they had "free" money. No car fuel, lodging and food spent since they are out of the field.

They stay out of the field during car service, sick leave, holidays, training and such.

After a few months, these days out of the field, "free" money was spent. It added up.

Company audit the books and charge against their salaries the debts and no advance until you cover your debt.

They are crying like hell to me!!! They need to cover the expenses from somewhere.

No doubt about it. I am on the hunt for the book as we speak.

There is an incredible amount of wisdom to be learned from studying how ancient societies organized their affairs. Their advantage was that they dealt with human nature in the raw. Our affairs are organized vestigially, taking into account only fragments of what was known and valid long ago, which is valid now.

They clearly understood the equation debt=slavery, for it was quite literally slavery that debtors faced if they could not pay. They also understood the social value of forgiving debts.

It is fascinating that the first known word for freedom, amargi, meant freedom from debt.

I don't know if I am making myself clear. What I want to say is that we can learn a lot, a whole bloody lot, from the way things were done in antiquity.

The equation debt=slavery is one which we have forgotten but need to re-learn. And we are, except it is being re-learned the hard way. It also explains in some measure the cycle of credit expansion and bursting.

If there is no voluntary wiping clean of the slate, it will be involuntary, and a lot more difficult.

now i know what folks in alaska do
they order a lot of stuff from amazon
just ordered the hard copy of debt 5000 years, for later read by first and second born
and
downloaded the kindle edition to my ipad, to join the other 300 some books waiting for my read or re-read

and
ordered a random selection of idir / karen matheson CDs to then upload to ipad, joining my 16 days of continuous-play music

am now ready for vacation again

adore mail-order / electronic download

in 1993 i invited lady friend then living n splitting time between barrow point and anchorage alaska to boracay island philippines over christmas new years, full fare, wasn't taking any chances - the switch in weather and such was so drastic that she went into system shock for the first two days on the island. two years later, immediately before she pulled the trigger on whom to marry she wanted to re-do the trip and asked whether i was up to my original offer, that she should move to hk. had she simply shown up ala in the movies, my life could well have turned out a bit different. alas, by then my then girlfriend and now wife already was busy planning parties and ceremonies in multiple jurisdictions. am unsure what this story has to do with amazon, alaska, mail order, instant gratification, weak state of mind, closing the deal, etc etc etc, my just reflecting ;0)
