Jim Rogers won't purchase more gold and silver as prices surge and may invest in agriculture amid expectations of persisting shortages.

Agriculture will be "wildly exciting" as global food shortages worsen, according to Rogers. "You pick an agriculture product and I'll say buy it," he said.

Monthly food prices tracked by the United Nations advanced in June for the 10th time in the past year, staying near a record reached in February. Higher food prices have helped push 44 million people into poverty, according to the World Bank.

Wheat prices climbed 22 percent in the past month as the U.S. cut its estimate for domestic inventories next year. Corn surged 71 percent in the past year and sugar climbed 47 percent.

Global agriculture trade my climb 43 percent to exceed $1 trillion by 2020 amid surging demand from an expanding middle- class in emerging markets, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said last week. Middle-class households outside the U.S. may double to about 1 billion, the agency said.
