Obama To Unveil New Jobs Package In September Speech

8/17/2011 2:24 PM ET

(RTTNews) - Following through on a pledge to refocus on jobs following the conclusion of the debt ceiling debate, President Barack Obama plans to deliver a speech in early September outlining a proposed package to put Americans back to work, the White House said Wednesday.

In a post on Twitter, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said that Obama will deliver the speech after the Labor Day holiday on September 5th.

The package will include "meaningful, new initiatives to grow the economy and create jobs," Pfeiffer said, adding that the president will "push Congress to act."

While the White House has not provided specific details about the package, officials have said that it is likely to include a mix of tax cuts and infrastructure spending along with measures targeting the long-term unemployed.

During his three-day bus tour across the Midwest, Obama has been calling on Congress to extend the payroll tax cut for workers and long-term unemployment benefits.

The jobs package the president will outline in September will likely include those extensions but also go well beyond those proposals, officials said.

However, Obama is likely to face stiff Republican resistance to any jobs proposal that includes new government spending.

Highlighting the opposition that he is likely to face, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virg., wrote an op-ed in Wednesday's USA Today claiming that the House Republican majority was elected with orders to stop Washington from spending money it doesn't have.

"The American people understand that Washington can't keep spending money it doesn't have," Boehner and Cantor wrote. "They want to see less government — not more taxes."

The GOP leaders added, "The Republican majority in the House continues to listen, which is why despite being outnumbered in Washington, these changes are happening incrementally."

In light of the focus on spending, White House officials said that Obama's speech in September will also include a call for long-term deficit reduction beyond the $1.5 trillion that is being targeted by the "super committee" created by the debt limit agreement.
