I did stop by my local gold dealer. There were people there, but no one was buying gold. He also sells jewelry, collectable currencies (I thought about buying a 20 French Franc note for $1.00, but didn't), and coins of all sorts.

One guy was buying 10 silver dollars out of a plastic bucket; he was told, "We pick them out and you take what we pick, except you can exchange one if you want to."

They were too busy for casual inquiries, so I left, probably making them think I was planning a stick-up.

In any case, no gold-buying mania in evidence.
