Being a Chicago pol, and with a team of Chicago pols, I think they just didn't know the depths of ignorance and hatred to which the national (R)'s can descend.

In retrospect I think you are right. As a Chicago kid I thought they would do great. But in Chicago there really isn't any Rep opposition; they are as ineffectual as the national Dems are right now.
