Why would anyone bother?

Gates drops in on IBM zdnet.com

Bill Gates took a long, hard look at Java Tuesday -- at rival IBM Corp.'s booth.

Microsoft Corp.'s chairman and chief executive made a surprise "walk-through" on the Comdex show floor, giving IBM executives very short notice and prompting them to cancel interviews with the press to pitch Gates on new technology and products. ...

"If Java only performs well on the Windows platform, then it will obviate the need for Java," said Mike Lawrie, general manager of IBM's Personal Software Products Division.

Bill seems to be getting around at Comdex. But what does this mean? Cease-fire? Spying mission? Diplomatic overture? Looking for new things to Embrace and Demolish? Psychological warfare? Don't ask me.

Cheers, Dan.
