A Chinese derived city is a simple unit. It draws from 5.000-year experiment. A country created in a jungle by Mediterranean whites, Negroes and natives in 500 years is different unit. You can argue that the US also is young. But again it is an Anglo experiment since it draws from Anglo experience. I am talking about complexity. e could have done it quickly. If we'd gone S. Africa way. But it'd had paid a high price. Note that I am not defending the very thinhgs that are wrong there and must be tackled. We know them longer before other people because we havce been subject to them, mind you. We had done wonderfully well last century. Brazil and Russia were highest GDP growth countries last century. Brazil is case of by-passed industrial revolution. Rural Europe, one country after the other entered, orderly, the industrial revolution. In Brazil as it was going to get things right, something elsewhere derailed. I don't blame them to run a close country neither its tendency to turn into itself. In the 70's was the oil shock. as we adapted to the first oild shock (1973) we got the second. Then Paul Volcker jacked up interest rates with the know results. Finally the body of knwoledge that the country has today, the set of circumstances and demographics are all working in synch. With population all urban, it is very costs effective to complete the job that had been subejct to stop and go of the past. Compared to us China needs a much higher level of effort to get rich than Brazil. Minnows will all be there. But they won't matter. Not because they are doing anything wrong. But because of scale.
