Mang, excellent post! This is exactly what I wanted to know, sounds good for the one way data systems and an interim solution for companies slowed by the billions required to build the two way data systems.

>>You don't seems to have to tie up a phone line with Coms' one-way cable modem :<<

Because residential customers don't like the thought of tying up phone lines while accessing the Internet through their cable system, 3Com is emphasizing dynamic IP assignment and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. When UDP datagrams or multicast streaming sessions are being sent from a server, the upstream phone link does not need to be maintained. In fact, it can be broken down for most of the time a user is online, then re-established automatically when the user wants to send information back to the server.

With the phone line used only sporadically, Gun expects one-way cable modems to remain popular long after two-way modems (which use coaxial cable in both directions) enter production.

I think this would mainly apply with programs like Pointcast and other "push" type programs where predefined content can be sent down the cable. For web-surfing you'd need to maintain a constant connection because every click on a hyperlink "sends information back to the server."
