I was surprised that its being discussed at that level. tejek, look at what SI has taught us. In the beginning conservatives and liberals posted on the same threads. But soon we found that we were always talking past each other. Soon, the conservative threads banned all liberals at the drop of a hat. The liberal threads banned many conservatives for ideas they didn't like. I think what you are seeing around the world, in this country and on SI is a sort of self actualization i.e. we are noticing our fundamental differences. When were we ever able to do that in all of history? If one were to put a start date on all of this I would pick the 60's because that was the first itme in history massive numbers of people stood up and openly questioned their parents, culture and even religion. Why? Because the old ideas are basically incorrect by modern facts and standards. As we become more educated the flaws became more evident e.g. racism, sexism, genderism, all the isms. Look at the senate. The most liberal Republican is now more conservative than the most conservative democrat. That is not going to change IMO. So we find ourselves divided between those who live in the reality based community and those who don't.
