"Diversity" is indeed a code word, but I am not so sure it is a word exclusively associated with the left

Where we used to have religious, cultural, political, etc. tolerance -- now, we have diversity. Tolerance implies - or at least allows for the possibility - that the person may think that his own beliefs are in some way superior to those of others. This kind of makes sense, for why would I want to hold certain opinions and beliefs if I didn't think that they are in some way superior and more true?

Diversity implies, more or less, that all cultures, religions and political systems and beliefs are basically equal. Tolerance can be encouraged and taught; diversity can be imposed and enforced. The way I see it diversity is tolerance which grew assertive and aggressive and which sees itself as more fair and superior to other belief systems and religions.

Barry Goldwater mentioned 'diversity' a few times in his 1964 acceptance speech. He also talked about a 'diversity of ideas' in the Republican Party.
