Tell the populace that sacrifice wasn't necessary after all. The old fucker might well have been thinking, "I won't be here to see the wreckage anyway." It certainly was not the right course to build a better country (or world). Whatever, it's done now. I'd actually love to know what you see on the other side of that "20-25 year depression". The decline that happens during that time doesn't seem like it'll leave much of anything conventional metrics would term a 'recovery'.
