I am sure you realize many counties in more urban Houston, Dallas and Austin are already blue while most of the rural parts are as red as you'll l find anywhere which was a shock to my purple existence in Florida. I also think many more than you might realize might not have right wing type views but want to live in safe, lower cost, low tax areas as they age and you aren't going to find that anywhere near San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, DC or NYC. A couple of comments........first I posted that article because I was surprised to see it in a business website and not a political one. And the author is not a political pundit but rather a sell side analyst on Wall Street. I may be alone in this observation but I find that fact remarkable. Secondly, I am sure that some counties in TX are blue but I think TX politics have become so far right that even blue counties probably come off pretty conservative. Plus, TX Republicans have that state thoroughly wired, it looks nearly impossible to elect a Dem. Thirdly, you would be surprised how much cities like SF, Portland, Boston, Seattle.....even NYC have improved the quality of their poorer neighborhoods. For an example, Seattle has been able to get developers to build subsidized units within their market rate projects throughout the city. In addition, it has been able to 'seed' poorer neighborhoods with some market rate projects, improving the quality of life in all its neighborhoods. Same thing can be said about SF and Portland. Of course, Tacoma still has pockets of run down housing but even they are not as prevalent as they were just ten years ago. Fourthly, I think if the US starts to divide.........it won't be in half. I suspect we will break up by regions........balkanized..........much like the old Yugoslavia. And I think it will happen if we continue on the present track............life will become too intolerable. People complain about the schisms and fighting in DC but that's just a manifestation of what's happening in the rest of the country. Maybe a break up will shock us into being more reasonable with each other.
