Things are not quite as bad as some would have us believe

I'm thinking that also.

But I'm also thinking that employment and the GDP growth has decoupled completely from US corporate profits. The corps have fine tuned a strategy to make more money... without revenue growth and without new employees. It could last a while... maybe for a very long while considering emerging markets.

I am hoping that will change as demand increases. For an example, during the past year, Boeing has been getting lots of plane orders.........not as much as Airbus but that's a different story. Suddenly, in late Spring, I noticed Boeing started hiring......big time. And now Boeing related firms are starting to hire here as well. Demand is key. If consumer demand grows, I think companies will be forced to hire. July was a big month for consumer demand. If that continues, by year end, things should be getting better. I know, I know........ a big 'if'.
