slave labor is less efficient and therefore less competitive and productive than free market labor. slaves will work as little as they can get away with (anyone would). and if someone has to watch over a slave, that person has to be paid too, taking away the effectiveness of 'watching'. people work much harder for themselves than a slave driver. The slave labor I was refering to was from political prisoners. Since they will have to pay for their subsistence anyway, the labor is essentially free.
