Government has essentially woven the stitches that kept America together and probably kept the Country from undergoing violent revolution in the 1930's. Government has given opportunity to so many who never ever would have had the chance to make something of themselves but for government. Just a take the GI Bill for instance. The know how learned by that generation is the building blocks that let American corporations become what they are today. Additionally, what you say about cutting spending in the middle of a recession is just going to exacerbate the recession.
