There is always a 'but ... justification' for promoting hate and denying oneself the availability of goodwill toward others. It probably works in a sheltered homogenous grouping, even though such groupings are schizoid by nature. The shelter of a homogenous group offers comfort with familiarity, common background, similar contexts for exchanging ideas and experiences within a general sense of safety. The danger in such groupings is in the tendency toward "group think," which blocks the ability to adapt in healthy ways to changing circumstances. In modern times the cultures of the world have and continue to clash and blend so that cohesiveness of homogenous groupings is threatened and the typical unhealthy reactions are evident in societies around the globe.

The tighter the grip on group identity the more radical the reaction to changing circumstances and to out-groups. See if the following describes any groups you can think of. I am fairly sure you can see how it applies to Islamic fundamentalist groups.

"You can tell if a group suffers from groupthink if it:
  • overestimates its invulnerability or high moral stance,
  • collectively rationalizes the decisions it makes,
  • demonizes or stereotypes outgroups and their leaders,
  • has a culture of uniformity where individuals censor themselves and others so that the facade of group unanimty is maintained, and
  • contains members who take it upon themselves to protect the group leader by keeping information, theirs or other group members', from the leader.

    Groups engaged in groupthink tend to make faulty decisions when compared to the decisions that could have been reached using a fair, open, and rational decision-making process. Groupthinking groups tend to:
  • fail to adequately determine their objectives and alternatives,
  • fail to adequately assess the risks associated with the group's decision,
  • fail to cycle through discarded alternatives to reexamine their worth after a majority of the group discarded the alternative,
  • not seek expert advice,
  • select and use only information that supports their position and conclusions, and
  • does not make contigency plans in case their decision and resulting actions fail. "
