And yet-he did it with no sense of sacrifice, did you think? It wasn't with a sigh of weary resignation that he had to take on the burdens of all these inadequate people, save them from themselves. Indeed, he saw them as wonderful. Moral people act--but maybe without realizing it's caused by another's inactions or wrong actions? because if they perceived that it was or judged the other's actions--then maybe they wouldn't do it with the same attitude. They just do what they perceive as right and what they as individuals must do. They don't blame others for failing.

Do you think she realized her own responsibility in everything? Do you think she felt guilt or just sadness without comprehension?
I think sometimes, Gaugie, that we do things -or don't -not because we're bad, or even terribly weak, but only because we're human. And to feel guilt for that, to think that we are above that would be arrogant. To recognize that we are human, and then to try to rise above the condition, that-THAT is noble. To work toward understanding, toward strength, that deserves admiration, not criticism if we fail. The boyfriend had no such ambitions, and neither did the mother. Only Carl--he strove to understand constantly in his limited way.

I just really really loved what you said. I thought it was incredible.
