Or maybe you would buy more clothes because similar tariffs alow your company to make more money and pay you more.

And if you still had to pay more to get less in term of clothes you would also have less left over to buy everything else.

Meanwhile the loss of efficiency that comparative advantage and trade currently brings about would cause people in other countries to pay more for the goods they produce and consume leaving less money left over to import from the US even if their government don't impose retaliatory tariffs.

Everyone becomes worse off when you have production and consumption decisions made by the government instead of by private citizens and companies making decisions in their own best interest.
