TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sharp Corp. (J.SRP or 6753) and two other electronics equipment makers have signed on to a standard for high-density audio discs developed by Sony Corp. (SNE or 6758) and Philips Electronics NV (PHG), the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said Wednesday.

Sony, Marantz Japan Inc. (J.MJP or 6799) and Accuphase Laboratory Inc. will display prototype Super Audio Compact Disc players at an audio equipment fair opening Wednesday in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district.

Sony plans to market the advanced CD player in spring 1999 at a price comparable to that of DVD players. Marantz Japan has also designed a prototype, but has not decided on a release date, the newspaper said.
