I have spent a lot of time in underground coal mines. I have been in an equal number of union mines as non-union mines. Not only are the non-union miners happier with their job, they are easier to work with, work safer and more willing to just get the job done.

The union miners won't do anything that isn't their job. And god forbid if you try to do something like plug something into an electrical outlet, which is considered a union job. Even if it means waiting an hour for the union guy to get there.

And I have always felt safer in non-union mines. Why? because in union mines the miners consider safety to be somebody else's job. In non-union mines it is everyone's job.

Now that has been my own personal experience. But there are exceptions. There is one mining company that is notoriously anti-union where there are definitely issues with safety. As I am sure there are safe union mines. But if my life depended on it, I'd rather be in a non-union mine.
