You wrote that if you were a semi-skilled worker and unhappy with your lot you'd walk in and "demand a raise."

I'd say that in today's economy where semi-skilled workers are desperate for any job and there are few openings available and many applicants lined up to fill them, you'd be fired on the spot or laughed out of the boss's office.

Based on that statement I'd still say that your world is a very different world than the world of most semi-skilled and unskilled workers.

And, as for your statement characterizing a union as an "organization that has proven negative results for everyone over the long term", I have to disagree. I think that despite far too many union abuses, (and some collateral damage to car tires and ragtops) without unions this country would be a less vibrant, less equal and less free nation and that employees would be worse off. Ed
