Why 52% of all scientists are liberal.

I wonder what the percentage of engineers is as to being liberal. Since our last jousts I have come to far better understand the differences between "scientists" and engineers. A primary difference is who pays their salaries. Many "scientists" do their work with government funded studies. Engineers on the other hand I believe are more likely to work for a living - in a corporation. There is a huge difference between studying the habits of fruit flies and building bridges.

I have a good friend who does research at a local university. He is a pretty rational guy - until the subject of government funding of "research" comes up. As in Watergate - simply follow the money. He would be one of your for liberals - following the money.

I cut my teeth on the ancient Greeks. Plato, Hericlitus. They guide my ideas.

Me too. Homer and Thucidydes. I was a Greek major in college. Arete is not a relativistic concept.

Why 52% of all scientists are liberal.

It's amazing the figure is that low, when most scientists spend their lives in the left-wing cocoon that is modern academia. Until I began working in the real world, I never even heard conservative ideas. I didn't know conservatives even had ideas. I had been taught in school that conservatives were reactionary, evil, and greedy. And I went to school in the old days, before the 1960s New Left completed its conquest of the academy.

Even more interesting, I think, is that half of the scientists in that poll identified themselves as atheists.
