Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. That was the liberal document. Jefferson was more liberal, even infatuated with the French Revolution for a time. But the Declaration of Independence is not so liberal when set against the Declaration of the Rights of Man. All it declares is independence; it doesn't overturn the social order or laws inside America.
