I agree with this. The free market works well for cosmetic procedures which are much simpler to research and which allow people plenty of time to research, since they are elective. Not the same when you just had a heart attack.

That is certainly one variable. However, another variable is the insurance itself and how it is administered and regulated.

the one thing that cosmetic procedures have because of the lack of insurance is the concept of competition. This helps to drive the prices down.

In our current health care market, cosmetic procedures are one of the few areas that has a free market. Most of our health care is a weird hybrid market where Government pays 50% of the bills, and in doing so, ensures that everything stays very expensive, and new treatments are accepted very slowly.

Studies have shown that the percent of medical dollars that address imminently life-threatening conditions like heart attacks is rather low. Even for serious illnesses like cancer, people can and do get second opinions. If the free market operated, they could compare prices as well, so competition could operate.
