I've got mixed emotions on the pipeline fiasco.

I know there are methods of producing Canadian bitumen in situ with a minimal extraction footprint.

We need to bridge the transition to renewables and Canadian oil probably has the fewest negative political aspects of any source worldwide.

I guess it isn't clear to me why that bitumen need to be pumped all the way to the Gulf to be processed.

If the refining has to occur in the US, poke the damn line across the border with Canada and treat it in Montana somewhere.

Surely we don't have to send it all the way across the US to heat it.

Alternatively, if the Canadians are rubbing their hands about supplying the giant energy pig next door, they ought to refine it themselves and sell us the finished product.
