i understand your viewpoint, mq, but i am making no judgments, simply pointing out that since time immemorial, a debt-forgiving tradition has existed. it is a self-interested one for it precludes the debtor from turning on the rulers and doing by force what could be done peacefully.

debt has been seen for eons as the royal road to slavery. it is no coincidence that most religions condemned the charging of interest. in the middle ages, canonical lawyers had to invent a way around this prohibition so that the medicis, etc., could establish their banks.
