Yes, and I tell my clients three things about that.

1) Yes, forgiveness of debt is in the Bible.

2) The right to declare bankruptcy is in the Constitution.
(Article 1, Section 8, Clause 4) authorizes Congress to enact "uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States." Many of the Founding Fathers were debt slaves to British factors.

3) If they have been making only the minimum payments on their debts, they have already paid off the original debt many times over.

As a more personal observation, I represent, among others, people whose IQ is barely room temperature. What kind of person would loan more than $40 thousand in credit card debt to a woman who is mentally disabled, living with her parents because she is unable to survive alone, making less than $20 thousand a year? What realistic alternative does she have? It never should have happened. The lenders have taken leave of their senses.

Personally, I believe in living within your means. The system of massive credit card debt loaned to people with no hope of repaying it is insane. Predatory lending will destroy, not only the borrowers, but the lenders. That is what I believe.

But so far, I am wrong. Predatory lenders prosper.
