Ditto what you and shakes said. I started down this road in 2003 for the reasons you have both already identified. And while I am well over 60% allocated to the PMs I am also involved with a couple of local businesses that are pushing their respective envelopes of technology. One is delivering on-demand, cloud-based, risk management solutions. The other is a third generation genetic sequencing company. Both of these companies are now getting significant traction...after grinding away at it for that past six or so years.

Charlie Munger says that people who invest in gold are jerks...that they should invest in businesses instead. Well, to Charlie I say...jerk this. Because I invested in precious metals I was able to preserve the buying power of my capital and use some of it to help fund these companies through what has been a very difficult period all around. And because they were able to survive and, I believe, have something of value, we are all going to benefit. For example, the sequencing business is going to have a profound impact on things like, oh...drug development. I don't know what that's worth. Quite a few ounces, is what I'm thinking. <g>
