Taxes Are Up, Haven't You Noticed?

Regarding Holman W. Jenkins, Jr.'s "The Weekend Interview with Robert Lucas: Chicago Economics on Trial" (Sept. 24): Does Robert Lucas truly believe that "taxes haven't really been raised yet"? While neither federal income nor the capital gains tax rates have increased, those are far from being the taxes we pay.

Various fees and taxes have increased dramatically. Next time you fly, look at the taxes tacked onto your plane ticket, rental car and hotel room. What about property taxes? While the value of my house has steadily eroded, the amount of tax I pay has doubled in the last six years.

Federal income and capital gains taxes are just a fraction of the money extracted from us at all levels of government, and the total bill has increased regardless of the method of collection.

Robert Lucas voted for Barack Obama thinking he would be Clinton-like in his economic policies, despite many signals such as then-Sen. Obama's comment to Joe the Plumber. The rational expectations revolution in economics is surely dead.
