even the loan shark at casinos cannot be considered predatory, for no one can force a loan on an unwilling taker

Predatory lenders are much like the British traders who flooded China with opium.

Similarly, one can't force somebody to smoke opium, at the point of a gun. It would require standing there all the time making sure they inhaled, every day. <even the loan shark at casinos cannot be considered predatory, for no one can force a loan on an unwilling taker, just as no one sane can force anyone into oral sex. >

In fact, it would be easier to force the oral sex than the opium smoking. Beverly Bouma was so forced before being killed by this lot, two of whom have happily since died rotoruadailypost.co.nz Unfortunately, such carnage is normal in NZ in recent decades. Those hideous barbarians were sane, but evil. 50 years ago, such things were unheard of. That is not Virtuous Victorian Values in action.

>>no one can force a loan on an unwilling taker<<

I agree with this, in principle.

But people do a lot of dumb things unwittingly, and there is always someone willing to exploit them.

Slum landlords are subject to housing laws.

Quacks are subject to prosecution for selling bad drugs or practicing medicine without a license.

Food sellers have always been prohibited from selling adulterated products. We have labeling laws and health inspections and USDA regulations.

Car makers are not allowed to sell dangerous vehicles, and we all have to have our cars inspected for safety every year.

So I don't see why financial institutions should expect to get away with egregious acts.

No matter how libertarian you may be, in principle, nobody has the right to commit fraud.
