no unbacked currency has survived in the long term. gold as a store of value has done its job since history began to be recorded.

are those who trust unbacked currencies rational?

i grant you, if the issuer is prudent, conservative, and a good steward of a nation's wealth and credit, there is no reason why a paper currency cannot survive and do well. how many central bankers and policy-makers are good stewards? politicians armed with a paper-backed currency always overspend. seems to be an iron rule of politics, which depends on rewards to supporters for its raison d'être.
