Warp drive in two directions
By Paula Bernier

Warp Drive Networks LLC later this month plans to roll out two-way Internet access services in Silicon Valley and Seattle.

Warp Drive offers broadband links to the Internet over UHF or microwave links. However, until now, the company offered only high-speed Net access on the downstream path - from the Internet service provider to the customer. Customers used wireline modems and telephone lines to send upstream requests. And a separate Internet account was needed.

To use the two-way services, customers will receive modems that can connect with Warp Drive's network, for downstream access, and another operator's wireless network for upstream access, the company's chief operating officer, Andrew Siegel, said.

Siegel wouldn't name the upstream partner, but Greg Dalzell, director of marketing and product development at Metricom Inc., said Warp Drive has been testing Metricom's Ricochet network.
