When did progress that benefits society as a whole become evil?

Whether its progress that benefits society as a whole is questionable (even if you ignore personal freedom in your calculation of benefits), but for the sake of argument I'll accept that for the moment.

Accepting that point, its not the benefit that's evil, its the way of going about it. Creeping totalitarianism is bad only partially because often the central control orders people to do foolish or otherwise not-optimal things, even when it happens to "get it right" its still bad to control people to such an extent.
