Lee - Re: " Does "big silicon" mean that Merced will be the "Dolly Parton" of all chips?"

Only if it's a "bust".

Or a "boob" of a processsor!

Lee, re : "yet IBM beat Jerry to the layoff list, and the
turkeys get rewarded with a jump in their share price. I think Jules deserves to get rewarded and
redeemed for his call on this one. What kind of good company lays off people in a fast growing
industry?"

This is the new IBM. In the old days, IBM never laid off anybody, even "deadwood". They'd just ship them off to their Montana division in January. Now, they are quick to downsize in a business unit that is not cutting it. Hey, it's business and they owe it to their stockholders. Re Jules' IBM puts...nothing but guts (or something else). IBM has the world's best computer development and manufacturing capability, and the world's best semiconductor development and manufacturing capability...witness their record of first to 0.25 micron technology, first to 0.18 and first to copper interconnected ICs. Betting against IBM is like betting against the U.S. of A.
